Through the years school has had different purposes, however, it has always brought up controversy. I think school has a different meaning for everyone, but the main goal is the education aspect. It was always a matter of what should be taught and to who. School is a way to prepare children for adulthood and to help them develop. Teachers want to introduce the real world and set them up for success. I think there is no set purpose for what school should be, but I do believe that it is put forth in order to provide the necessary knowledge for kids to become adults.

How do we talk about issues that matter?
One line from the T1 article that I think branches off from this topic is, "What if these conversations are not actually difficult, bu...
Hi Alexis! I totally agree with your blog post on what is the purpose of school. If we take a look of the history of education we can see that it has change a lot. From white rich males only having the opportunity for a proper education to everyone having access to it through public education. Of course, we still have controversy like you said for instance, the rally we had at the capitol of Austin in 2015 on whether or not we should allow private schooling be pay through taxes. This "National School Choice Week" rally really shows how the topic of school has different meanings for people. The purpose of school is endless.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't aware of all the issues going on with education until this class and just trending things on the news. It seemed like it had always been a problem but now I see that there has been much progress. In a way, these rally's bring to light all the issues with education, and I hope it is enough to bring good change.
DeleteHi Alexis,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading how you feel as the education aspect is ultimately the purpose of school. You mentioned how it is a matter of what should be taught and to who, and this made me wonder who actually is calling the shots when it comes to what children learn as they advance in their studies. In my opinion, it should be the educators and legal guardians of these children making the decisions as we all want the same thing, what is best for the students and their futures. I believe this would create a clear purpose for school versus a board of some sort making choices based on what will make them look good to the public eye.
Great post!
Thank you ! It has made me overthink things as well, as to who and how they choose what is taught. It is so controversial, kind of like with the whole teaching religion. It seems like it would be difficult to choose certain topics for such a wide range of students. I totally agree and think its best for those who actually interact with the students, to choose what is best for them to learn.
DeleteHello Alexis, I liked what you said in your blog, about not being sure of the purpose, but knowing that we are there to learn. Everyone does get something out of the school experience wether they always view it as a positive or negative thing is to each their own, but it will always help us to grow and mold us into who we are as adults and now who we are as future educators.
ReplyDeleteDo you find that school gradually finds a general purpose as we progress in our education from elementary school to middle school to high school to college, or is this notion still something that is still an unclear purpose? I feel as though we all attend college for many reasons, but the main goal is to get that degree to get a good job to have a good life. All of the years of school before college are involuntary on wether we would like to attend but we are all striving for that goal of graduating and accomplishing that checkpoint in life, its the in between school and graduation that makes all the difference in what school is like for a person.
DeleteI feel like elementary is to learn the basics, its our fundamentals. Middle school and high school are more to find ourselves and our interests. I wish we weren't made to choose a strand to follow at such a young age, because by high school, those 4 years are wasted on a major that most likely changed. I will say, I think I got more out of my electives than my strand courses. The core classes were important for education, but I feel like you get the actual experience for your future in college. That's when you are set on what you want to do, and there is that added pressure that makes you finish your career choice.
DeleteHi Alexis! You’re absolutely right that school has always managed to bring up a wave of controversy. It developed as a means of creating educated citizens that could make responsible and informed decisions in their own personal life as well as the political level. As the years have gone on, I think school has begun to focus more energy on the creation of skills that are applicable outside of the classroom. Education provides a necessary outlet for learning and improving in all aspects of life.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I've seen how schools are pushing more for the students future. It focuses on shaping them as a person and educating the on present matters that affect them. I think it is understood that schools want what's best for their children, but the controversy is with those who think it is not being done right. There's always going to be issues, but the students education is what should matter most.
